Sid Howard Track Classic – July 12 at the East 6th Street Track

Registration

A meet to honor the legendary Sid Howard, a pillar of the New York running community who, on his 60th birthday, set the age group world record for 800 meters. As a coach, Sid has worked with runners of all ages through Team for Kids, as well as seniors throughout New York City. This will be our third Sid Howard Track Classic, and Sid, now 86, will be there to cheer you on.

The cost is $30 for adults; children (under 18) race for free.

The meet will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12th at the East River Track. Order of events will follow the schedule below. We will announce more precise times for everything after the 5000 once we know how many heats of the 5000 we will have. There may be only one, so plan accordingly.

Schedule:

5000 – 8:30 a.m.

Rest of events to follow in sequence, time TBD based on how many heats of the 5000 we have – the 800 will not start later than 9:30 and the kids races will be no later than 10:00

EAST RIVER EKIDEN – First Saturday in April

The East River Ekiden is an unsanctioned 50K Japanese-style relay comprising five legs of 5K, 8K, 12K, 15K, and 10K, in that order. Each of the legs will begin at Evil Twin Dumbo, which will serve as our race hub. The first four legs will use the greenways and bridges of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan; the fifth will run from Evil Twin Dumbo through Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy to Evil Twin Ridgewood, where we will have an after-party starting at noon.

Divisions: Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, and Non-binary. To be mixed at least three of your runners have to identify as women or non-binary.

RACE DAY LOGISTICS

The race will have a staggered start based on seed times. Wave 1 will begin at 8am, and we will send subsequent teams at intervals determined by their projected finish times. The fastest teams will start last, ensuring that all teams reach the finish pretty close together. Each team captain will serve as the point person for communicating their team’s projected finish time to us, and the course/race-day logistics to their teams.

SAFETY & WAIVER

This is an unsanctioned road race, hence the use of bridges and bike paths as much as possible. Runners accept any risk associated with running on open streets. To race, every runner will have to agree to a waiver acknowledging receipt of and agreement to the terms. We will send the waiver to each team captain, who can then forward it to each of their team’s runners.

BEACH TO BROOKLYN (October) – for future reference

Each leg is roughly 5K, though the Strava app gives us slightly different distances than GPS when running the course. That said, what matters most are the exchanges.

The first exchange is just off the parking lot at Jacob Riis Park when you turn onto the short bike path.

The second exchange is on a small bridge on the bike path that runs parallel to the Belt Parkway.

The third is on Bedford and Avenue U by Dunkin’ Donuts.

The fourth is on Ocean Avenue and Dorchester.

The final leg goes up Ocean to Prospect Park and then completes a lower loop of the park, finishing just a bit past the same entrance at Ocean and Parkside where you entered the park.
